- 1862 – Robert E. Lee assumed command of the Confederate forces on the outskirts of Richmond, saved Richmond, and created the legendary Army of Northern Virginia. That army was the most famous of all Confederate troops until they surrendered on April 9, 1865, at Appomattox.[1] The 19th Virginia Regiment, C. S. A. fought mostly with the Army of Northern Virginia.
