John Lloyd Newcomb was an American educator and the second president (1931-1947) of the University of Virginia.

John Lloyd Newcomb (1881 – 1954) was appointed interim president of the University of Virginia on May 23, 1931, following the death of Edwin A. Alderman on April 30th. An adjunct professor of civil engineering since 1905, Newcomb had been serving as the assistant to Alderman since 1926. After nearly two years as acting president, Newcomb was confirmed as president of the University of Virginia, a position he held until 1947.[1]

Notable events

  • September 21, 1940 – UVA President John L. Newcomb said in a statement that the refusal to admit David Carliner to the UVA School of Law was not politically motivated. Carliner had been arrested earlier in September for distributing leaflets without a permit. [2]
  • September 18, 1942 – Newcomb tells incoming first-year students that their time is to be spent preparing to win the war and warned against fun as usual. [3] “This is certainly no time for business or fun as usual. Every able bodied student should enter one of the enlisted reserves – Army, Navy or Marine Corps…he should pursue his studies with the maximum of application and diligence in order that in the shortest time he will be prepared to render the service which is expected of him and which he will cheerfully give.”
