John Casteen III (1943 - 2025) was the 7th president of the University of Virginia. He left office on July 31, 2010.

Biography
Casteen was born in Portsmouth, Virginia, on December 11, 1943. He was the first member of his family to attend college and enrolled at the University of Virginia at the age of 17. He received three degrees in English from the University of Virginia (BA in 1965, MA in 1966 and PhD in 1973). [1]
Casteen served as Virginia's Secretary of Education from 1982 to 1985. Following that position, he was president of the University of Connecticut[2].[dead link]
UVa presidency
On June 12, 2009, Casteen announced he would retire from the presidency of UVa effective August 1, 2009[3].
Awards
Casteen received the Paul Goodloe McIntire Citizenship Award in 2009 for his service to the community. [4] [5] [6].
