In 2018, James E. Ryan became the University of Virginia’s ninth president.

On Sept. 15, 2017, the University of Virginia Board of Visitors selected James E. Ryan as the University’s next president to succeed Teresa A. Sullivan. [1] Ryan earned his law degree from UVA and previously served on the School of Law faculty for 15 years.[2]

Ryan’s takes over

The University of Virginia and its Board of Visitors formally inaugurated James E. Ryan as the University’s ninth president on October 19, 2018 at 3 p.m. on The Lawn. Ryan took the oath of office and officially became president of the University at the ceremony, which took place on the steps of Old Cabell Hall.[3]

Facts & Figures

The University of Virginia is made up of eleven schools in Charlottesville plus the College at Wise in Southwest Virginia. Not including the College at Wise, the University employs nearly 30,000 people, including approximately 16,000 faculty and staff and approximately 12,000 Health System employees. Undergraduate Students (On Grounds): 16,034; Graduate & Professional Students (On Grounds): 6,771[4]

Education

Ryan received his AB summa cum laude from Yale University and his JD from the University of Virginia, which he attended on a full scholarship and from which he graduated first in his class. After law school, Ryan clerked for William H. Rehnquist, the late Chief Justice of the United States, and then worked in Newark, N.J., as a public interest lawyer before entering into teaching. From 2013 to 2018, he served as dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Education and the Charles William Eliot Professor of Education.[5]

Married to Katie Homer Ryan. Ryan and his wife, have four children – Will, Sam, Ben and Phebe. He is interests include running, skiing, surfing, mountain biking, fly fishing, cooking, and photography.[6] [7]
