James "Jim" Hingeley is the current Albemarle County Commonwealth's Attorney, taking office in December 2019. He campaigned for many years to establish the Office of the Public Defender for both Albemarle County and Charlottesville which opened in 1998.
Early life and education
Hingeley graduated from Harvard University in 1969 and the University of Virginia School of Law in 1976.
Private practice
Hingeley practiced law in private practice in Charlottesville from 1978 to 1991.
Public Defender
Hingeley served as public defender for Albemarle County and Charlottesville from 1998 to 2016.[1] Prior to that he was public defender for Lynchburg from 1991 to 1998.
Albemarle County Commonwealth's Attorney
Hingeley is the current Albemarle County Commonwealth's Attorney. He defeated incumbent Robert N. Tracci in the 2019 election.
