James J. Thomas, c. 1906

J. J. Thomas (September 3, 1844 - February 26, 1935), was a Confederate veteran and for many years in charge of the county jail - most notably during the Murder trial of J. Samuel McCue.

James J. Thomas died at home, two miles from Free Union, at the age of 91. Mr. Thomas was the son of the late Ralph T. and Martha (Thurman) Thomas of Nelson County. He spent practically his entire life in Albemarle County. He entered the Confederate service at an early age and had a notable war record. He was a familiar figure at the annual reunions.

Mr. Thomas led an active life and had enjoyed excellent health up to a year prior to his death. He was an active member of the Baptist Church at Free Union.

Mr. Thomas married Miss Mary Goodwin of Albemarle, who died 53 year prior. Two sons survived, E. E. Thomas of Charlottesville and J. L. Thomas of Bethlehem, Pa. There were 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. His son, Cameron Mason Thomas (1874−1922) served as Albemarle County Sheriff.
