Jacob Stroman became the Charlottesville City Attorney on July 1, 2023. [1]

Ten months later, Stroman was placed on administrative leave. [2] For the second time, the Richmond-based law firm of Sands Anderson took over the position on an interim basis.

Background

Stroman earned his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law. His undergraduate degree is from Princeton University and the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. [3]

Stroman has served in many localities across the Commonwealth of Virginia during his career. He has worked in Gloucester County and has also worked in the office of Norfolk's city attorney as a deputy. [4] [3]

From 2002 to 2006, Stroman served as county attorney in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. [4]

Stroman served more than six years as the County Attorney for Spotsylvania County before resigning to become a staff attorney for the Virginia Supreme Court. [5]

After that position, he served as Senior Assistant Attorney General in the Virginia Attorney General's Office where he saw oversaw construction related issues. [3]

Before coming to Charlottesville, Stroman was City Attorney in Chesapeake. The city's communication office posted an announcement on their YouTube channel on July 5, [2018]]. [3]

One of his last acts was to warn that locality's elected officials that they were in violation of a Freedom of Information Act request. He did so in two memos sent on November 18 and November 30 of 2022 related to the city's relationship with a Planning Commissioner. [6]

Stroman may have resigned before he was to be fired. He was present at the beginning of the Chesapeake City Council meeting on January 10, 2023 but Council voted to accept his resignation immediately after a closed session. [7]
