Hutchins Franklin Inge
Hutchins Franklin Inge (April 16, 1900 – March 28, 2002) was an American physician and Democratic politician. Born in Charlottesville, he became the first African American elected to the New Jersey Senate, representing District 11 from 1966 to 1967. He was defeated in his re-election bid in 1967.
Dr. Inge practiced medicine in Newark, New Jersey, and later lived in Osterville and New Bedford, Massachusetts. He was a member of several civic and professional organizations, including Omega Psi Phi, the Urban League, the NAACP, and the American Medical Association.
He died at St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford at the age of 101 and was buried at Oakwood Cemetery.
Family: He was the son of George Pinkney Inge (1859–1948) and Kate Virginia (Ferguson) Inge (1864–1941), and the nephew of Hutchins Inge (1855–1936). He married Dorothy Helme in 1970 (d. 1996).
