The Haven at First & Market is Central Virginia's resource center for the homeless and working poor. It also hosts music events and was a venue for performances sponsored by the Tom Tom Founders Festival.[1]. The Haven is operated by the Thomas Jefferson Area Coalition for the Homeless.

The Haven requested $45,000 from Charlottesville as part of the city's 2012 budget.[2]


Council considered a special use permit for a day shelter at their meeting on February 5, 2007. At the time this was for an organization known as COMPASS. [3]

In 2008, Tom hired Janet Matthews to project manage the renovation, then called the First Street Church Project. A partnership with the Blue Ridge Area Coalition for the Homeless (BRACH), formerly known as Thomas Jefferson Area Coalition for the Homeless, was formed. In 2009, BRACH hired Kaki Dimock as their executive director with the task of opening and operating The Haven. On January 18, 2010, The Haven opened its doors.[4]

In 2014, The Haven became an independent nonprofit. [4]
