Greenbrier Elementary School is a fully accredited child-centered school serving approximately 300 Charlottesville students in preschool through grade four. The principal is Jim Kyner.[1] Greenbrier was built in 1962.[1] The mascot is a frog.

Approximately 40% of Greenbrier's student population speaks English as a second language.[1] Because of this, Greenbrier offers intensive literacy instruction to build confidence and language skills. In 2010, Greenbrier began a partnership with Hearthwood Apartments.[1] Greenbrier staff and volunteers offer afterschool homework help in a vacant apartment to students who live nearby.[1]

In 2012, Greenbrier was granted a three-year waiver from annual accreditation. The waiver was issued by the Virginia Department of Education to Greenbrier for achieving a minimum 95% pass rate of all four Standards of Learning subject areas for two consecutive years.[2].

History

Greenbrier Elementary School was built in 1962 in the Greenbrier subdivision.[3] The school was originally a grade 1-7 school headed by Ora Lee Starnes, who began teaching in Charlottesville in 1929.[3] The school's courtyard began as a community project and is equipped with gardens, rain barrels, a windmill, and a pond.
