Frank Ix & Sons was a textile firm that came to Charlottesville in 1928. They operated a mill and factory which manufactured evertything from silk to lycra. For many years, the company was Charlottesville's largest private employer[citation needed] but its fortunes were affected by the decline in the United States' textile industry. By 1999 they only had 150 employees, down from a high of 1,400[1]. The mill closed in 1999, but the entire complex has become known as the Ix Project, a mixed-use building just south of Charlottesville's Downtown Mall.
There were attempts to unionize in 1948. [2]
