Sperm and Egg Cryopreservation is the medical procedure whereby a man's sperm or a women's eggs are extracted, frozen, and preserved for future use in order to achieve conception.

With the recent announcement of the Google, Apple and Facebook corporations to include egg freezing as a paid part of their employee benefit plans, it is likely that the future will increasingly introduce fertility preservation as a topic in the lives of everyday American citizens. [1] On the subject of fertility preservation—and specifically egg and sperm cryopreservation—the Charlottesville community offers extensive services that are somewhat unique in the mid-Atlantic area. These services are provided by a collaboration among three key organizations in Charlottesville:

  • The UVa Urology Dept
  • The UVa Cancer Center
  • The Reproductive Medicine and Surgery Center of Virginia (RMSCVA)

UVa Urology Dept, UVa Medical Center, West Complex

The Men's Reproductive Health practice at UVa Urology specializes in a number of treatments dealing with infertility. The principals in the practice are Dr. Ray Costabile, Chief of Urology, and Dr. Ryan Smith. Dr. Smith received his specialty training in Male Reproductive Medicine and Surgery at the Baylor College of Medicine. [2]

The UVa Men’s Reproductive Health practice provides comprehensive male fertility services including performing sperm extraction preparatory to cyroperservation. Sperm extraction is part of the process of Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) at UVa Urology and RMSCVA—the manipulation of human sperm, eggs, and embryos to help with conception in cases, for example, where couples are unable to conceive through natural methods. ART techniques usually culminate with direct intrauterine insemination (IUI), or in vitro fertilization (IVF). [3]

UVa Cancer Center, UVa Medical Center

Individuals who are diagnosed with cancer, and who would be requiring potentially damaging chemotherapy or radiation treatments to a part of the body near the ovaries or the testicles, may wish to choose to have their sperm or their eggs cryopreserved for future use.[4]

Male patients at the UVa Cancer Center who are considering sperm cryopreservation would be referred to the UVa Urology Dept to discuss this process further. As previously mentioned, the fertility specialists at UVa Urology provide the counseling and procedure for men who are seeking sperm extraction for cryopreservation. Female patients at the UVa Cancer Center who are considering egg cryopreservation would be referred directly to RMSCVA to discuss this process further. In this case, both the egg extraction and cryopreservation would be performed at RMSCVA.

The Reproductive Medicine and Surgery Center of Virginia

The Reproductive Medicine and Surgery Center of Virginia (RMSCVA) is a fertility specialty clinic located on Martha Jefferson Blvd in Charlottesville, VA, and offers comprehensive infertility treatments ranging from the initial diagnosis and treatment of infertility to advanced reproductive techniques. The principals in the practice are Dr. Chris Williams, Dr. Laura Smith, and Dr. Bruce Bateman; all three physicians are also on staff at the UVa OB/GYN Dept at the UVa Medical Center. [5]

Whether a female patient is referred directly from the UVa Cancer Center, or a male patient has had their sperm extracted at UVa Urology, RMSCVA is the specialty location where both egg and sperm cryopreservation occurs and where the eggs and sperm are stored, until such time that they would be utilized by Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) to achieve conception. As mentioned, both RMSCVA and also UVa Urology offer ART services.
