Elsie Barksdale Ray

Elsie Barksdale Ray was shot and killed by a Mrs. William P. Casey on January 9, 1934 due to an alleged affair. [1]

Ray was originally from Batesville and was employed at the New Presto restaurant on West Main Street.

Murder

The murder occurred on Preston Avenue near Tenth Street after a confrontation over the relationship. Casey shot Ray in the head and she was taken to the University Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. Ray was the mother of a four-year-old child and was separated from her husband at the time. [2]

According to the Saturday March 31, 1934 afternoon edition of the Daily Progress, the previous evening, Mrs. William P. Casey, of Stony Point, was cleared on the charge of having murdered Elsie B. Ray by a jury in Judge A. D. Dabney’s corporation court at Charlottesville. The jury was out only 30 minutes. [3][4]
