Diffusion Pharmaceuticals is a Charlottesville-based chemical company that seeks to develop medicine based on research at the University of Virginia. The company went public in 2016 in order to fund additional clinical trials.

The company was founded in 2001 by David Kalergis and John Gainer. The latter is an emeritus professor of chemical engineering at UVa. Gainer is now the company's chief scientific officer. He invented trans-sodium crocetinate (TSC), a chemical that re-oxygenates hypoxic tissue without allowing too much oxygen to diffuse into normal tissue.

Kalergis is a corporate lawyer and investor who had served on the boards of Pharmaceutical Research Associates (now PRA Health Sciences) and Virginia National Bank.

The company is listed on the NASDAQ. [1]
