Charlottesville Youth Council
The Charlottesville Youth Council began meeting in January 2013. The council is made up of city residents between the ages of 13 and 18. They meet monthly to discuss issues that are brought to them by the City Council or that members bring up. They have looked at walkability issues, school funding, and public safety on the downtown mall. [1]
2014 report
In May 2014, they presented their recommendations to the City Council which included the adding a bike lane on Melbourne Road, adding a blue emergency phone light system on the Downtown Mall that would directly connect to a 911 dispatcher, and the closure of one city elementary school and an increase in the meal tax to help address funding challenges in the school system. [2]
2015 report
The council is expected to make a presentation to City Council in the spring of 2015. [3]
