Charlottesville 2000 was an initiative of developer Lee Danielson to renovate the Charlottesville Downtown Mall as an entertainment district. With Reid Nagle as a partner, he opened a kiosk that would serve as a newspaper stand. One of the ideas was to build a six-screen movie theater on the mall. To do that, Danielson sought to open 2nd Street West crossing to one-way vehicular traffic. This was opposed by a group that went on to call itself Townwatch. [1]

Part of Danielson's vision was to attract high-end chain stores, something opposed by many in the community.

One of the biggest projects was the Charlottesville Ice Park which opened in 1995. The Regal Cinema opened next year. An ice-cream parlor and steakhouse were also built, but these were not successful. [1]
