Carl W. Smith

Carl W. Smith (1927-2005) was the founder of AMVEST Corp., a privately held company specializing in coal mining, natural gas production, and finance.

Born to Dr. Carl W. Smith and Lila Vicars Smith, the younger Carl grew up in Wise, Va. and attended Greenbrier Military School in Lewisburg, W.Va. where he played football. A 1951 graduate of the University of Virginia, Smith and his wife, Hunter J. Smith, supported a variety of initiatives at the University during his lifetime. He served as a member of the Board of Visitors from 1980 to 1988, chairing its Finance Committee, and was a two-term trustee of the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration Foundation.[1]

Carl William Smith died on Thursday, December 8, 2005 (aged 78). A memorial service was held at the University of Virginia Chapel, interment is at Monticello Memorial Gardens in the Smith family mausoleum.
