The Board of Visitors ("BoV") is the 17 member governing body of the University of Virginia appointed by the Governor of Virginia, and overseen by a Rector and Vice Rector respectively. In addition to the Official Voting Board, a non-voting Student Member and a Faculty Representative are also part of the organization, with each being elected for a single year rather than the traditional 4-year terms that regular members enjoy.[1]

History
- The Board of Visitors was created almost a year after Thomas Jefferson's early plans for the University of Virginia were approved by the Virginia General Assembly.[2]
- The first meeting of the Board of Visitors occurred on May 5, 1817, where they met and discussed matters of fundraising and construction, although this was mostly an informal gathering.[2] This original Board was composed of just six men: James Madison, James Monroe, John Hartwell Cocke, David Watson, Joseph Carrington Cabell, and Jefferson himself.[2]
- Following the official establishment of the University by an 1819 charter,[2] a formal Board of Visitors was established with 7 members: Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Joseph Carrington Cabell, John Hartwell Cocke, Chapman Johnson, James Breckinridge, and Robert Taylor.[1]
- In 1922, Emilie Watts McVea became the first woman to serve on the Board.[3][1]
- In 1926, Mary-Cooke Branch Munford, a notable Women's Rights Activist at the time, became the third woman ever to serve on the board.[4]
- Notable Local Figure Paul Goodloe McIntire, served on the Board of Visitors from 1922 to 1934.[1]
Membership
Each member is appointed for a term of four years and may be reappointed for one additional term. The Board can choose to elect a student as a nonvoting participant for a period of one year. Terms typically end on June 30th, with new terms beginning on July 1st (the following day).[1]
