Bessie Guy is one of many dozens of people painted by Charlottesville artist Frances Brand as part of her "Firsts" series.
Guy was the president of Charlottesville Church Women United. As a gospel singer, she worked for the State Department during World War II and sang for troops oversees. Brand also found her notable for her rendition of "The Green Pastures" spirituals by Hall Johnson, in film and Europe.
