Bertha Austin was a local Black woman who was photographed by Rufus W. Holsinger, with her portrait forming a part of the Holsinger Studio Collection.

Biography

Austin was born in 1878 in Albemarle County. She had nine siblings and four half-siblings and was able to read and write.

At an unknown date, Austin was photographed in formal attire by Holsinger, with this portrait eventually being developed into a small format dry-mount picture that formed part of the Holsinger Studio Collection.[1]

In 1903, Austin married Charles Hampton Austin (1882 - 1947), who worked as a railroad yard man. The couple had at least one son and one daughter together who lived into adulthood, with the latter surviving Austin herself.

Austin died in 1957 in Dinwiddie County.
