B. A. Coles, 1948

B. A. Coles (October 21, 1894 – September 4, 1971) was a local dentist who served the African-American community. [1] Dr. Coles was member of the Old Dominion Dental Society and first president of the Charlottesville chapter of the NAACP.

1908 $5 Indian Head Gold

Beginning in the late 1920's Dr. Coles and Dr. J. A. Jackson, both members of the Omega Fraternity, presented to the graduate of Jefferson High, who has maintained the highest average in English, a prize consisting of a five dollar gold piece. In 1934, through these two gentlemen, the members of the Old Dominion Dental Society offered a five dollar prize, apart from the annual award to the graduating class, to the pupil in any grade who wrote the best paper by Dr. Fred Moton, State Clinician.[2]

1946 election

The 1946 Democratic primary featured a three-way race for two nominations for City Council, subject to the June June general election.

Dr. Coles ran as a Democratic candidate for a seat on the City Council in the 1946 election. He coming in third that year to Roscoe Adams and Gus K. Tebellin in the April 2, 1946 Democratic primary.[3]

Dr. Coles came in sixth. [4] [5]

Family

Bernard A. Coles was born in Charlottesville and attended Howard Academy and Howard University, receiving his D.D.S degree at the latter institution in 1923.Dr. Bernard A. Coles died on September 4, 1971 (aged 76) and was buried in the non-segregated addition to Oakwood Cemetery.[6]
