The Albemarle County Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) hears and decides appeals by property owners to decisions made by zoning administrators in administration or enforcement of an ordinance within Albemarle County.

Additionally, the BZA decides on interpretation of the zoning map where there is uncertainty as to the location of a district boundary, and hears requests for variances to zoning.

A more detailed description of the powers and duties of the BZA can be found in the Albemarle County Code.

James M. Bowling IV became legal counsel for the BZA in June 2019 following a concern that Albemarle's own attorneys had a conflict of interest related to an appeal of a decision by the Albemarle County Department of Community Development. [1] [2]
