Alphonso Dix Payne (1859 - 1936) operated a livery stable in Charlottesville in the late 19th century and launched a horse-drawn omnibus in September 1883. [1]
Biography
Payne was born in Fluvanna County at Linden Hill on May 11, 1859 as the youngest child of William and Anne Flanagan Payne. His entry into the livery stable business was when he was employed by John Harman before going into business himself.
Payne served for more than 20 years as a member of Charlottesville City Council.
Payne died on December 31, 1936 and is buried in Maplewood Cemetery. [2]
