- January 7 – The political year began with a special election in Senate District 10 to replace the vacancy left when John McGuire was elected to represent Virginia's 5th Congressional District. Republican Luther Cifers defeated Democrat Jack Trammell. [1] [2]
- January 14 – Charlottesville Circuit Court Judge Claude Worrell rules that plaintiffs in a lawsuit against Charlottesville City Council had standing in court to challenge a special use permit for additional density at 2005 Jefferson Park Avenue, but also rules that Council had right to grant the permit [3]
- January 22 – Albemarle Board of Supervisors names Andrew Herrick to serve as Albemarle County Attorney [4]
- January 23 – Albemarle County School Board appoints Leslie Pryor to fill the vacancy left in the Rio District with the death of Charles Pace [5]
- February 26 – Charlottesville Board of Architectural Review approves a Certificate of Appropriateness for demolition of 200 West Main Street (Violet Crown) [6]
- March 18 – John Casteen III, seventh president of the University of Virginia [7]
