Deaths
- December 27 – Dumas Malone dies of a brief illness at his home in Charlottesville and is buried in the University of Virginia Cemetery. A professor and biographer who spent the majority of his career teaching at the University of Virginia (where he served as the Thomas Jefferson Foundation Professor of History), he is best known for his six-volume biography of Thomas Jefferson, which became the preeminent authoritative work on the life of the founding father.
