Instructions on Preserving Racial Integrity, 1924

The 1924 Racial Integrity Act was a Virginia State law passed on March 20, 1924 that prohibited interracial marriage and defined the white race. It required Virginians to have a certificate of racial composition that was approved by the Bureau of Vital Statistics. This certificate was necessary to marry.[1] The University of Virginia played a role in the research and advocacy that made the law possible.[2] Harvey E. Jordan and Ivey Foreman Lewis were key eugenicists at the university. Through their work, UVA and Virginia became a bastion for eugenics in the United States.
