The Assassination of James Garfield. Garfield was shot twice by Charles J. Guitea at Railroad Station in Washington, D.C. on July 2, 1881. After eleven weeks of intensive and other care Garfield died, the second of four presidents to be assassinated, following Abraham Lincoln.

- November 20 – Sarah Mason Sandridge Matthews (1881-1963), woman suffrage activist, was born in Charlottesville to Joseph Franklin Sandridge and Sarah Ann Biggers Sandridge.
- July 1 – the Council of the Town of Charlottesville held the required organizational meeting after the May 1881 election. The council was composed of the elected Mayor B. R. Pace and the six member Board of Aldermen, C. D. Fishburne, president; C. H. Harman, W. C. Payne, M. Trieber, A. B. Heller and John West.[1]
