• August 9 – Cain Hawkins is born into slavery in Millington to Frank and Elizabeth Wheeler Hawkins. A farmer and an active member of the Charlottesville Colored Agricultural and Industrial Fair Association, Hawkins had his portrait photograph prominently included within the Holsinger Studio Collection.

Deaths

• June 5 – Former Mayor of Charlottesville, James A. Leitch, dies.
• September 14 – John Bowie Strange was killed at the Battle of South Mountain during the Maryland Campaign.
