Births
- December 15 – William Linn Tidball is born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A writer and veteran of the Mexican-American War, Tidball served as an officer in the Union Army during the Civil War and later was stationed in Charlottesville as the first "Military Commissioner of Albemarle County," overseeing the military government of the area during Reconstruction.
Deaths
- September 20 – Isaac Hardin dies and is later buried on his land in Greenwood. Hardin was the first settler to own the land that eventually became Greenwood.
