- February 13 - The first instance of capital punishment that appears in the county records occurs when Aaron, a slave of Hugh Rice Morris, is hung on charges of forced entry and theft.
- April 1 – Meriwether Lewis (August 18, 1774-October 11, 1809) was appointed as Secretary to the President by President Thomas Jefferson, whom he knew through Virginia society in Albemarle County.
- July 19 – Charlottesville incorporated as a town. The Virginia General Assembly authorized a government of five trustees "who were to maintain streets, settle boundary disputes, authorize a market, quiet public nuisances, appoint a town clerk, and collect taxes to no more than $200."
