Events

March 21 - The Albemarle County Court made a number of court orders. A road was ordered to be cleared from Green Mountain Road near the head of Hog Creek into the courthouse road below Mr. Stith's Quarter, with the hands of several local gentlemen being ordered to clear the same road with William Harris as their overseer. Reny Shatteen was appointed surveyor of the Horn Quarter Road from the county line to Glover's Roa in place of William Allen, with several local male tithables being ordered to work under Shatteen on the same road. Matthew Ayres, Patrick Obryan, and William Olle were ordered to be added to the hands working under William Allen on the path from Glover's Road to the Slate River. William Mills was appointed surveyor of a road in place of Robert Davis. A road was ordered to be opened from the Holliday River to meet the Otter River, with the same surveyor and hands to continue the same road. William Hamner was appointed surveyor of the road from the late secretary's mill to the courthouse in place of Castleton Harper, with Harper's hands being assigned to work under Hamner. The tithables of Henry Hamilton and Samuel Moor were assigned to Gideon Morris Gant to work on his road. John Lewis was appointed surveyor of the road from the courthouse to Ballinger's Creek in place of William Harris, with Mr. Nichols' hands being assigned to work under Mr. Shelton.

March 22 - The Albemarle County Court made a number of court orders. Samuel Spencer was appointed surveyor of the road from the James River to Freeland's Tract in place of William Cabell. Philip Davis was appointed overseer of the road from Jones' Ford on the Tye River to Swan's Creek Ferry in place of William Cabell. Philip Morris was appointed overseer of the road from the Rockfish River to Havis Road in place of William Cabell, with the tithables of the settlements on Cabell's land along the Buffalo and Tye Rivers to clear the same road. The road from Freeland's Tract was ordered to be continued by John Goodwin's and from there to Marrs' Road by the Slate River, with Arthur McDaniel and the hands assigned to work under him being ordered to work on the same road under Gideon Marr.

March 23 - The Albemarle County Court made a number of court orders. On the motion of William Cabell, permission was granted to him to keep an ordinary at his ferry in the county on his giving bond and who together with Benjamin Harris (his security) to enter into bond for Cabell's keeping an ordinary according to the law, with Cabell also acknowledging a ferry bond. A road was ordered to be cleared from the courthouse road below Ballenger's Creek to Martin King's Ford on the North River, with John Anthony being appointed as the overseer. The hands at Turpin's Quarter were reassigned to Gideon Marrs' Road.

May 23 - The Albemarle County Court made a number of court orders. John Ried, David Lewis Sr., and John Wood (or any two of them) were ordered to view the way from the great mountains to Morrison's Road and compose a report on their findings. David Lewis and his workers were ordered to clear a road from Charles Lynch's Ferry to the courthouse.

May 24 - The Albemarle County Court ordered Joshua Fry and Charles Lynch to apply to the Louisa County court that the road from King's Ford on the Rivanna River may be continued from the county line to the Louisa County courthouse.

June 20 - On the motion of Giles Aligree, the Albemarle County Court ordered the road over MeChunk Creek by Aligree's house be turned the old way. William Cabell, James Christian, and John Harvie Sr. (or any two of them) were ordered to view the road from the mouth of the Tye River to the lower ford on the Rockfish River and make their report to the next court. The dispute among the inhabitants in the vicinity of the Rockfish River about a road from Rockfish Gap to Morrison's Road was ordered to be continued for further argument until the September Court.

August 22 - The Albemarle County Court made a number of court orders. Joel Walker was appointed overseer of the road from Chiles' to the plantation where John Bostick formerly lived, being assigned the same hands. A former order made for a road during the August Court of 1746 with John Childers as overseer was discontinued due to the route of the path being found to be inconvenient. The sheriff and the several surveyors of highways within the county were given notice to attend the court in September, with the clerk being ordered to create lists of the several surveyors within the county in the meantime.

August 24 - On the motion of Richard Burks, the Albemarle County Court granted him permission to clear a road from John Coleman's to John Beard's Road at the head of Appomattox.[1]
