UVA / Virginia Tech rivalry

The University of Virginia and Virginia Polytechnic Institute have had a long rivalry, but such a run of contested sporting events was not evident. In 1910, the Boards of Visitors for both schools decided to not hold a football game that year and to avoid recurring matches.

"We believe that a feeling of intense partisanship and rivalry would be engendered which would be detrimental, not only to the ideas of sportsmanship, but also to the increasing co-operative and friendly relations between the two schools," read a statement released on January 11 of that year. [3]
